Tips to Get Your Garage Door and Garage Ready for Winter

With winter just around the corner, now is the time to start thinking about how you can winterize your garage. Whether your garage is heated or not, your goal should be to keep the cold, snow, water, and ice from getting inside when the garage door is closed.
The garage is typically overlooked when it comes to winterizing your home. You want to make sure to include this area of the home on your “To-Do List” to help control energy costs this winter.

To help get your garage ready for winter, check out the following tips.
Tip #1: Get Organized
As the seasons’ change, so do the types of items you need to be readily available. Put away summer tools and equipment. Prep your lawnmower for winter storage. Get out your snow blower or snow shovel and make sure they are ready for the first snowfall.
A great way to keep winter tools organized is to install hangers on one of the garage door walls and hang them up to keep them off the ground. This will help them dry faster after you use them for snow removal.
Tip #2: Inspect Your Garage Door
Check to make sure your garage door opens and closes easily. Lubricate the door tracks if it is not moving smoothly. When the door is shut, look around the door for any light. Check the cables to make sure they do not seem loose or frayed. If you notice any mechanical problems, call your Richards-Wilcox Doors Authorized Dealer to schedule a service.
